ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS AND ORGANIC FARMING AT MOUNT CALVARY HIGH SCHOOL

Mount Calvary High School, with 1300 students, has integrated ecological awareness and organic farming into its curriculum, emphasizing holistic development. The school allocated 3 acres of rural land for diversified crop cultivation and established essential infrastructure, including two 20′ x 30′ greenhouses, spacious animal shelters for cows and goats, and compost units for organic waste recycling. This initiative introduced farming as a subject and extracurricular activity, engaging both students and teachers in practical agricultural tasks such as soil preparation, seed sowing, crop tending, and harvesting.

The farm cultivates a variety of crops including ladies’ fingers, eggplant, chilies, beans, and 150 banana and 150 papaya trees. These efforts not only enhance agricultural skills but also promote ecological awareness and sustainable farming practices. The project has successfully instilled a sense of responsibility and self-sufficiency among students, preparing them to adapt to various challenges. The inclusion of farming activities in the curriculum ensures that students develop practical skills alongside academic knowledge.

Funded by JesuitenWeltweit (Germany), this initiative has transformed the school campus into a productive organic farm, benefiting both the school and the surrounding community by providing healthy food and fostering a sustainable environment.
